It is important to find support from an adult you can talk to and trust.<\/li>\n\t
You don\u2019t have to cope with all your problems alone.<\/li>\n\t
No problem is ever too big or too small to share with a trusted adult<\/li>\n\t
Can you write down some feelings you have, this might make it easier for you to share with others.<\/li>\n\t
No matter how bad things seem, it\u2019s important that you try to keep yourself safe until you can get support.<\/li>\n\t
Even if you think you may be in trouble can you keep yourself safe until you can sort out the situation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

Most young people will turn to a parent, an adult they live with or someone in their immediate family but if you don\u2019t think you can do this can you speak to an adult that you can trust?<\/li>\n\t

If possible, it\u2019s better to tell an adult but if you feel you can\u2019t, could you tell a close friend, so they could help you tell an adult?<\/span> Be sure that you choose a friend you can trust to do what is the right thing to do \u2013 and to make sure that you can get the help that you need.<\/p>\n\n

Young people need to know that suicide is preventable and that others will listen when they share their distress, that it's never too late to seek help, and there is always hope. <\/p>\n\n
Every young person considering suicide needs to know they can be supported through tough times. If they are considering suicide, they should have a Safety Plan with details of what they can do to help themselves and who they can contact for support when they need it. Information about how to make a Safety Plan can be found on this website<\/p>\n\n

Thankfully suicide is extremely rare but suicidal thoughts and self-harm are increasingly more common in children and young people, so it is important that adults know how to respond safely whilst not being unduly anxious.<\/p>\n\n

Advice if the young person is distressed and you are concerned that they may be thinking about suicide<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Keep calm and do not panic<\/li>\n\t
Have a conversation with the young person to discuss their thoughts and feelings and open up a channel of communication so that they know they can talk to you now and any time in the future<\/li>\n\t
At this stage don't worry about having the \u2018right answers\u2019 straight away because at the moment listening to what they have to say, taking it seriously and showing that you care and helping them get the right support from a suitably qualified professional stay safe is the most important thing<\/li>\n\t

Sometimes young people may think of suicide as one of their options so it\u2019s really important to emphasise that thoughts and feelings can and do pass \u2013 even intensely painful thoughts and feelings and that there are so many things that they could do to deal with their situation if only they knew who to contact for support or what to do<\/li>\n\t
Let them know that thousands of young people experience thoughts and feelings of suicide every day, but they find ways to cope with these intense thoughts and feelings. Advice if the young person is actively talking about suicide:<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Reassure them that you are taking them seriously and that you will be there for them as much as you can be and certainly in the immediate crisis until they have help and support<\/span><\/li>\n\t
Reassure them that there is help and they will not feel like this forever and even intense thoughts and feelings pass, and that suicide<\/span> is not the best option or solution<\/li>\n\t
Avoid statements that they could perceived as minimising their distress such as \u201csurely it\u2019s not that bad\u201d or \u201cCome on now... you need to get over this.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n\t
Provide support and as much supervision as they need and never agree to keep suicidal thoughts and feelings a secret and always support them to seek support or seek assistance on their behalf<\/span><\/li>\n\t
Make sure they don\u2019t have anything that they could use to harm themselves right now whilst in their distress state and whilst you are arranging for them to get professional help them help <\/span><\/li>\n\t

What to do after arranging professional support<\/strong><\/p>\n\n
Whilst the young person is waiting for their assessment or additional support these further steps are recommended:<\/p>\n\n
Do not leave the young person alone until you think it is safe to do so or until the healthcare provider says it is safe to do so.<\/p>\n\n
Even if they\u2019ve had an assessment from a suitably qualified health care provider and you are convinced that their distress and suicidal thoughts or intent to self-harm have genuinely passed it\u2019s still worth making a Safety Plan.<\/p>\n\n
The healthcare provider may have already made a Safety Plan with them but if not, you can use this website to help you make one together<\/p>\n\n
